India’s first five-year plan | Dates, Definition & Facts

The first five-year plan launched in India on 1 April 1951. It presented before the Parliament on 9 July 1951 under the leadership of India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.

  1. It was drafted by economist K.N. Raj. 
  2. The first 5-year plan was based on the Harrod-Domar model.  
  3. Agricultural development was its main focus.
  4. Five IITs were set up in India after the end of this plan. 
  5. This helped us to get a growth rate of 3.6% per year which was more than the target.
